This class will be an immersion in the craft of writing poems and microfiction. We’ll look at a broad

range of contemporary prose and poetry, paying close attention to devices like assonance, refrain,

and syntactical parallelism, talking especially about how each piece establishes expectations in the

reader’s mind, and then either gratifies or subverts those expectations. There will also be a few in-

class writing exercises that will give participants the opportunity to apply these techniques in first-

draft poems or microfictions of their own.

Instructor:

James Arthur is the author of two poetry collections. His poetry has appeared in The New Yorker, Poetry, The New Republic, The New York Review of Books, The American Poetry Review, and The London Review of Books. Arthur received a Hodder Fellowship, a Stegner Fellowship, a Discovery/The Nation Prize, the Amy Lowell Travelling Poetry Scholarship, a Fulbright Scholarship to the Seamus Heaney Centre in Northern Ireland, and a Visiting Fellowship at Exeter College, Oxford. Arthur will read his poetry at the InKY Reading Series on Friday, Sept. 13 (7:00PM) at The Bardstown.
