Poetry Workshop
VISUAL POEMS & ERASURES
What do poets do when words fail them? While many have found creative outlets beyond the poetic line, today’s poets turn increasingly to visual mediums to expand their craft. This workshop will explore two process-based visual mediums—erasure and collage—to explore their creative logic and better understand their relationship to more traditional poetic modes. We will briefly survey recent examples by Naoko Fujimoto, Toby Altman, CA Conrad, Mary Ruefle, Jen Bervin, and others, and then break out glue sticks, white out, and other materials to create our own visual poems. Special attention will be given to compositional strategies employed in the works examined. Students are encouraged to bring magazines or clippings they might want to collage.
