About This Event
Explore with novelist Katy Yocum the way place serves as much more than an inert backdrop to the events of a story. In this writing workshop we will think of setting as a container. Properly written, place creates its own atmosphere, shapes the story it holds, and influences the characters acting within (and sometimes upon) it. We’ll read and discuss examples of vivid, meaning-imbued settings in fiction and creative nonfiction, participate in writing exercises that help illuminate the many possibilities offered by place, and develop plans for making the most of setting in your current writing project or one that’s brewing in your imagination.
