Poetry Writing Workshop: Good Poets Borrow

Sometimes inspiration for poems strikes from out of the blue. But in many instances, poets are inspired by other poets -- even to the point of borrowing (or maybe stealing) their words and images. T.S. Eliot, for example, claimed that "one of the surest of tests is the way in which a poet borrows ... mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different." In this workshop we will look at some examples of poetic theft, both the good and the bad. Then we will engage in some creative heists of our own in order to produce new work. Attention will also be paid to the ethics of poetic borrowing, and squaring creative license with literary citizenship.
